TROJANS' SHERIFF GOES LOW--AU GRABS THIRD IN NC

TROJANS' SHERIFF GOES LOW--AU GRABS THIRD IN NC

ANDERSON, SC--The Trojan golf team came into day two of the Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate with only a one stroke lead over fellow conference opponent Mount Olive, and senior Adam Sheriff, who shot a 77 on Monday, did all he could to keep his team in the hunt down the stretch; Sheriff tallied 7 birdies in route to a day two one-under 71 placing him third overall (148) in individual play. But junior Chris Bagwell couldn't repeat his even-par day one performance, and the Trojans fell to third place to finish at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation, right behind Mount Olive and a Pfeiffer team that bent but did not break, posting a 306. The Trojans were never able to put it all together as only one other AU golfer broke 80 on Tuesday. Senior Will Ferguson put together a final round 75, helping himself to a T17 finish, and helping the team to their day two 307. Charlie Bagwell finished in ninth individually despite his day two 80. This is only the second tournament all year long in which Bagwell has qualified, and a top-ten in such a competitive affair is nothing to squelch. But coach Danny Neal knows his team has better in them. "I wish we had gone lower," said coach Neal. "But I am not overly disappointed. We are getting to where we need to be." Where the Trojans need to be is in the hunt come late April, when the team heads to Clemons, NC for the Conference Carolinas tournament. Between now and then, they have just one tournament. In two weeks, the AU men will travel to Etowah, NC to play in a tournament hosted by future SAC rival Brevard getting them ready for what awaits them in Clemons.
