ANDERSON, SC--When a top performer does not play at a top level in any given competitive sport, a team usually is not going to play its best; but on Monday at the Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate golf tournament in Charlotte, NC at Old Sycamore Golf Plantation, it was junior Charlie Bagwell who led the Trojans with an even par 72 and sits in solo third place--not senior #1 player Adam Sheriff (77). "We'll take it," said Trojan head coach Danny Neal. "I mean the good news is, Adam can go way lower, and hey, so can Ryan [Booth], so we'll hopefully go out tomorrow and shoot a sub-300 round." Freshman Ryan Booth shot a 77 alongside Sheriff as they both share 15th place with two other golfers. Kenny Shockley capped off the Trojans' top 4 with an opening round 79, while Will Ferguson shot an 80. The Trojans collectively shot a 305 on Monday, good enough for second place behind a blazing hot Pfeiffer team. Pfeiffer was led by Andrew Shiflet (68) and Louis-Alexandre Pitre (71) in route to a team score of 294. The Trojans are 11 shots back of the lead, but they are only one shot clear of Conference Carolinas foe, Mount Olive (306) and only two shots clear of tournament host Wingate (307). The weather was all but perfect on day one, and with only a little chill in the air forecasted tomorrow morning and afternoon highs in the lower 70's, there is no reason to expect anything other than low scores.
