Sheriff Moves Into Top 20

CONCORD, N.C. -- Adam Sheriff of Anderson University shot a 3-over 75 to move into the top 20 of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tuesday at the Rocky River Golf Club. After two rounds on the par-72, 6,970-yard Rocky River course, Sheriff, a freshman from Anderson, is tied for 19th at 153 and is just three shots out of the top 10. Neal Jones of Barton College and Dion Sirrianni of Lees-McRae are tied for the individual lead after 36 holes at 2-under 142. Jones fired a 69 in the second round, while Sirrianni shot another 71. Sheriff, the CVAC Freshman of the Year, is one of five individual players in the field trying to qualify for the Division II national tournament. Sheriff's second round consisted of 15 pars and three bogeys. All three of his bogeys came on par-4 holes. "He had a lot of chances today," said Anderson head golf coach Danny Neal. "He hit some good shots and controlled his distances better with his short irons. He just couldn't make a putt." After shaft on his putter was damaged on the No. 3 green, his 12th hole, Sheriff putted the final six holes with a rescue club. He made five pars and one bogey in the final six holes. First-round leader Coker College extended its lead in the team competition by four shots in the second round. The Cobras shot a 294 in the second round for a 36-hole total fo 589, six shots ahead of Pfeiffer (595) and 21 shots ahead of Barton (610). The final round will be played Wednesday morning.
