AUGUSTA, Ga. - Behind a furious late second-half rally, the fifth-seeded Anderson men's basketball team overcame hot shooting in the first half by Catawba to upset the No. 4 seed Indians, 68-66, in the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by Augusta State at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Junior guard Brandon Young, a first-team all-conference selection, drained a 3-pointer from the right side with just 2.1 seconds on the clock to lift the Trojans to their first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament. Moments earlier junior forward Trey Britton drained two free throws with 36.3 seconds left to give Anderson its first lead of the night, 65-64, but following a 30-second timeout, Catawba regained the lead on Dominick Reid's jumper from just inside the arc on the right wing. As the Trojans worked the ball upcourt after another 30-second break guard Tony Anderson drove the lane and found Young f the open look. Trailing, 63-53, with just over five minutes remaining, Anderson mounted a rally by going on a 10-1 run over the next 3:51 to pull within a single point as guard Kevis Cornwell poured in six of his 19 points during the stretch. Anderson (24-7) notched a school-record number of wins and won nine of its last 10 games as the Trojans advanced to the finals of the Conference Carolinas tournament en route to earning their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, while the Indians (20-11) were making their fourth straight trip to the NCAA regionals and sixth in the last seven years. The Trojans got off to a sluggish start, misfiring on their first four attempts from the field, while Catawba opened red-hot, connecting on its' first four shots and jumping out to an early 9-0 lead, forcing Anderson head coach Jason Taylor to call a 30- second timeout. The breather worked for the Trojans, as Cornwell got the Trojans on the scoreboard with a 15-foot jumper from the left side at the 17:40 mark and following an Indians' miss the 6-foot-2 junior added a short jumper to pull AU within 9-4. Catawba opened a 10-point advantage before Brandon Young scored on a drive and Cornwell recorded an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to five once again and the Indians' lead hovered between five and eight points from the midway mark of the half until Catawba's Rob Fields hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to open another double-digit cushion with 8:19 left in the first half. The Trojans closed within 29-21 as Nick Trull drained a 3 from the top of the circle, but Catawba held a 38-24 halftime advantage. The Indians shot 50 percent from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Trojans opened the second half with a 7-3 run and eventually trimmed the deficit to just 46-41 with 12:41 remaining as Taylor Shugart scored six of Anderson's eight points during an 8-2 outburst. But the Indians countered with an 8-2 push of their own before Cornwell connected on his first trey of the night from the left corner to pull AU within 55-49 with 7:37 remaining. Young and Cornwell led the Trojans with 19 points apiece, while Trey Britton added 14 points and nine rebounds. Cornwell also collected nine boards. Anderson moves on to meet top-seeded Augusta State (27-3), which knocked off No. 8 seed Brevard, 91-73, in other quarterfinal round action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
