Big First Half Propels Trojans Past Barton

WILSON, N.C. - Powered by its potent offense, the Anderson men's basketball team wrapped up the road portion of its 2009-10 campaign with a 100-89 win past Barton in Conference Carolinas' action Saturday night at the Wilson Center. Anderson improved to 18-6 overall and 12-6 in the league, while Barton fell to 13-12 overall and 9-9 in the conference. The 18 wins by the regionally-ranked Trojans on the season equals the 2001-02 AU team for the most wins in a season since becoming a four-year institution in 1995-1996. The victory also keeps the Trojans in a three-way logjam for the second seed in the conference tournament heading into final weekend of the conference slate. "We may have played the best first half of the season tonight," Anderson head coach Jason Taylor said. "We took care of the ball and didn't take any bad shots." The Trojans, winners of four straight and five of their last six, snapped the Bulldogs' modest two-game win streak by connecting on 50 percent of their shots from the field and never trailed in the contest. Anderson steadily built a 13-point cushion midway through the opening frame and the lead held steady through most of the first half and held its largest lead of the contest, 53-37, with less than a minute to play in the first half. Barton pulled within 55-48 early in the second half but it would prove to be as close as the Bulldogs would get, as AU held off each surge. Guards Tony Anderson and Nick Trull paced five Trojans in double figures, each with 20 points, while Brandon Young added 19. Trey Britton netted 16 points on the night and Stephen Cobb chipped in 11 points. Young dished out a team-high seven assists, with Taylor Shugart collecting a game-high 13 rebounds, with Britton notching a double-double by pulling down 10 boards. Anderson closes out the regular season with a three-game homestand, beginning on Monday when the North Greenville Crusaders invade the Abney Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Box Score
