Trojans Win on Senior Night

ANDERSON, S.C. - Using a balanced offensive attack with six players in double figures, Anderson defeated Pfeiffer, 80-63, in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action Saturday night at the Abney Athletic Center. With the win, Anderson improved to 21-6 overall on the season and 14-6 in conference action, earning the third seed in the league tournament that begins Tuesday night. The Trojans will play host to No. 6 seed Barton, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. The Trojans continued to build on their record-setting season, winning their seventh consecutive contest and eighth in their last nine, while Pfeiffer (17-9, 13-7 Conference Carolinas) had its two-game win streak snapped. The Falcons are the fourth seed and will host Queens Tuesday night. Neither team was able to build a more than a seven-point cushion in an opening half that featured eight ties and eight lead changes. With the Trojans holding a slim, 8-7, lead at the 15:13 mark, both teams went nearly three minutes without converting a basket. AU's Stephen Cobb notched his second field goal of the night to end the drought and the teams battled on even terms until the two-minute mark. Anderson scored eight of the half's final points to claim a 39-32 halftime margin, but the Falcons came out of the break with a 7-0 run of their own to knot the score for the seventh time of the night with 17:37 left. The Trojans snapped the outburst by sandwiching a pair of old-fashioned three-pointer around a basket by Pfeiffer's James Morse. Junior Brandon Young, who Became AU's all-time leading scorer in the win past Lees-McRae, dropped in a driving layup and hit the free throw. Following Morse's score on the other end, it was Stephen Cobb's turn to convert the three-point play, boosting AU's lead to 45-41 with just over 16 minutes on the clock. But the Falcons climbed back, tying the score for the eighth and final time of the night at 52-52. Junior guard Kevis Cornwell's three-point play broke the tie and gave the Trojans a lead they would not surrender as Anderson posted a 14-3 scoring outburst over the next five minutes and led by as many as 17 points in the final moments. Young paced the Trojans with 17 points, while Nick Trull added 13 points off the bench. Cornwell, Cobb. Tony Anderson and Oskars Ernsteins each netted 11 points on the night. Chris Woods notched a double-double for Pfeiffer with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, with James Crowder chipping in 11 points and 13 boards. Box Score
