Anderson and Cornwell Lead Trojans Past Knights

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Senior guard Tony Anderson connected on two late 3-pointers as Anderson University held off St. Andrews, 86-75, in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Harris Court. The last time these two teams met, the Trojans held off a late charge by the Knights and this afternoon's contest was similar as St. Andrews trimmed Anderson's 19-point first-half lead to just three, 62-59, with more than six minutes to play, but the Trojans countered with an 11-3 run to push back out to an 11-point cushion with 4:14 left. The double-digit cushion held strong for the remainder of the game, as AU (16-6, 10-6 Conference Carolinas) never trailed en route to claiming its second straight win and third in its last four outings, while St. Andrews (7-16, 3-13 Conference Carolinas) has dropped nine of its last 10. "Every team in our conference is good," said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. "It's tough to come in here and play and I'm glad we got the win." Anderson knocked down the first of his four treys on the night to trigger an outburst that saw the Trojans build its two-point lead to 27-12, courtesy of a 14-1 surge midway through the opening half. Guard Oskars Ernsteins and forward Stephen Cobb drained back-to-back 3s late in the half to give the Trojans an 18-point advantage and Cobb's basket at the 1:17 mark built the AU cushion to the largest of the game, at 41-22. But the Knights refused to go away on their home court and edged within four points on Kurt Fonderbosch's trey midway through the second half, but AU's Nick Trull countered by draining his lone 3 of the contest and the Trojans pushed back ahead by 11 to set the stage for St. Andrews' final surge. After the Knights pulled within three, Trey Britton and Ernsteins hit three consecutive free throws, while Anderson hit his final 3-pointer. Anderson and Cornwell each scored 18 points to lead five Trojans in double figures, with Britton adding 14 points and six rebounds. Cornwell also dished out a team-best five assists, while Brandon Young netted 11 points, all from the stripe. Taylor Shugart chipped in 10 points and Cobb also collected six boards. Anderson continues its three-game road swing at Queens in Charlotte on Monday, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Box Score
