HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University baseball team (8-25, 4-11) rallied from a five-run deficit and scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning en route to an 8-7 win over Anderson University (14-19, 7-9) Friday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Bears Field.
With the score tied at seven in the bottom of the ninth and the bases loaded with one out, L-R senior outfielder Stephen Andrews was hit by a pitch that pushed the game-winning run across the plate.
Andrews finished with a game-high four runs batted in and hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to lead the Bears.
Andrews' round-tripper in the second inning staked L-R to a 2-0 advantage before Anderson reeled off seven straight runs.
The Trojans broke a two-all tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run home run from Ryan Saxon.
Saxon, who led the Trojans with four hits and three RBI, added a run-scoring double in the seventh inning as Anderson built a 7-2 lead before L-R began its comeback with two runs in its half of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, junior outfielder Stephan Arcieri tied the score at seven with a two-run triple that led to Andrews' game-winning RBI on the walk-off hits batter.
The Trojans' Zach Reeves added an RBI triple in the third inning. .
L-R sophomore Jared Carroll pitched the final four innings in picking up his first win of the year for the Bears while Anderson's Elliott Tolley fell to 1-2 after being tagged with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson will wrap up their South Atlantic
Conference weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning
at 11 a.m. The doubleheader was moved up two hours due to the
threat of rain.
