DUE WEST, SC--The weekend did not start out according to plan for the Anderson University baseball (16-25,5-13) team as they began a 3-game series against archrival Erskine College (28-8,9-6) in Due West on Friday afternoon; the eleventh ranked Flying Fleet put up 18 hits--7 for extra bases--in route to a 12-2 victory over AU. The Trojans got 8 hits and only were able to round the bases twice. William Buzhardt did not offer up much, as he pitched 8 innings for Erskine, striking out 8 batters, and walking just one. Offense for AU was largely provided by Derek Hipp and Blair Carson, as Hipp went 1-4 with a run and RBI, and Carson was 2-2 with an RBI. The game got out of hand very early for Trojan starter Chris Pitts, as he conceded 8 hits and 7 earned runs in just one inning of work, earning his fourth loss on the year (2-4); freshman Riley McDermott came on in early relief and threw three innings for AU, but was touched up by the fleet himself to the tune of 6 hits and 3 earned on just 3 K's. The good news for Anderson is that there are two more opportunities to beat their "down-the-road" foe this weekend' and improve on their Conference Carolinas record. The other bright spot--Buzhardt will not be the starting pitcher in either outing. The series continues in Due West tomorrow, with one 9-inning game at noon, and a 7-inning game to follow that will cap off the weekend series, and the season series for the Trojans and the Flying Fleet.
