GREENWOOD, SC--The Trojan baseball team battled all the way into the ninth inning on Tuesday night at Legion field in Greenwood, SC, but AU could not overcome a 4-run sixth inning by Lander University, as they fell 7-6; a triple off the bat of Lander's Brian Bender cleared the bases, scoring 3 runs on one swing, providing all the offense the Bearcats would need. The Trojans produced 10 hits on the night--not a lackluster offensive performance. But AU pitchers walked 8 batters in the contest, and timely hitting by Lander proved to be the difference, as 4 of those batters walked made it around to score. Lander took a 3-0 lead in the third, an inning in which Trojan starter Luis Martinez walked two batters and threw one wild piitch on just two hits. The Trojans took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on four hits and three walks. Alex Roberson walked and Nick Easterlin and B.J. Smith singled to load the bases. Derek Hipp hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Anderson's first run, Easterlin scored on a balk, and Blair Carson singled home the tying run. Josh Grubbs hit a go-ahead two-run single. The Trojans were able to pull within a run in the top of the seventh when Carson reached on an infield single, moved to second on Trent Still's single, and scored on a Jared Rikard single. But Bearcats pitchers Andy Quick and David Glover were able to hold the Trojans at bay the rest of the game. Billy Veal (4-0) was credited with the win in relief of Ridlehoover. Luis Martinez (1-1) took the loss for AU. Leading batters for the Trojans were Carson (2-for-5, two runs, RBI), Rikard (2-for-2), Ryan Saxon (2-for-4), and Grubbs (1-for-4, two RBI). The Trojans will go at it with archrival Erskine for a vital Conference Carolinas battle this weekend in Due West, with the Beville Cup on the line. The three game series is set for a single 9-inning bout on Friday at 3:00pm and a doubleheader on Saturday to begin at noon. Complete Box Score
