TROJANS LOSE TO SC AIKEN IN LAST MINUTE MATCHUP

AIKEN, SC--The Anderson University Trojans (16-19,5-9) were supposed to be in Brevard today. The Trojans hosted the Tornadoes in Memorial Stadium nearly one month ago, and since then the Trojans knocked off #12 Tusculum 7-3, picked apart nationally ranked rival Erskine 7-3, and had started to piece together a quality season; but a rocky road began on a trip to Barton two weeks ago, and since that layover in Wilson, NC which was capped by two straight losses to the Bulldogs, the AU baseball team has been trying mightily to keep the wheels on the wagon. The Trojans replaced tonight's game at Brevard with a battle at regional rival, USC Aiken (18-13,5-7), who they will face again tomorrow night. USCA came into the game having won 8 of their last 10, and they showed utter disregard for the Trojans travails, as they beat AU 16-6. The Trojans got solid offensive contributions from catcher Trent Still, second baseman Ryan Saxon, and centerfielder Derek Hipp. Still was 1-3 with an RBI and 2 runs, as Saxon went 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run. Hipp went 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI. The Trojans even began the game with a vengeance, grabbing an early 3-1 lead by the bottom half of the third; but in that home half, the Pacers answered to tie the game at 3 apiece. USCA catcher, Cody McMorris led the way for the Pacers, as he began the hitting to tie the game in the third with a bunt single. McMorris gave Trojan pitchers fits all night long, going 4-5 from the plate with 2 runs and 4 RBI. Trojan starter Bryson Graydon (1-4) was chased after only 3 innings. AU pitchers were only able to muster 7 K's on the evening compared to 8 walks. Derek Hipp tried to revive his team with a late, proud homerun, but his effort followed a 5 run fourth, a 2-run fifth, and a 6-run sixth for the Pacers--a hole that was just too deep. The Trojans return to Aiken tomorrow in an attempt to snap USCA's current 3-game winning streak; knowing that they have only lost by more than 3 runs twice over the last nine games, the Anderson University baseball team should return to fight with confidence and resolve.
