TROJANS FEND OFF FLEET WITH GOOD DEFENSE

ANDERSON, SC--When the Anderson University Trojan baseball team last went at it with rival Erskine in Due West, SC, the two teams combined for 26 runs on 9 dingers in an epic non-conference battle; but Tuesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium was a completely different story, as the Trojans used small-ball, timely hitting, grinding pitching, and great defense to outlast the Flying Fleet 7-3. With the win, the Trojans improve to 14-9 and end a four game losing streak. "It's just good to come out here tonight and get the win," said Trojan head coach, Joe Miller. "The guys fought hard, we got some solid innings out of the freshman [Williamson], and we beat a real good hitting team." The go-for-broke style of the Flying Fleet was evidenced very early as Erskine's first three outs came by way of deep fly balls. Kyle Williamson pitched 5 1/3 while giving up 6 hits on 2 earned runs. "I mean, they hit some balls hard, and I just hung in there as long as I could," said Williamson, a freshman from Columbia, SC. "Outfielders made plays, infielders made plays, we rolled some double plays when we needed it...all of us just played well." The Trojans were led on offense by senior Blair Carson, who went 2-3 with three runs. Andrew Davis was 0-3, but the lefty first baseman was able pick up two RBI with a sac fly. Trent Still broke the action open for the Trojans right away in the first inning as he blistered a 3-1, 2-out offering to left field, sending BJ Smith and Derek Hipp home. Still was 1-2 on the evening with 2 RBI and a run scored. The Trojans chased Fleet pitcher Chachere Freeman after only 2 1/3 innings Riley McDermott came on in relief, and played the damage control role for the Trojans when Erskine loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. AU escaped only conceding two runs. Erskine, who leads Conference Carolinas with 46 homeruns, did not even pick up a hit over the last 3 1/3 innings. McDermott, a freshman from Davie, FL, kept the Fleet guessing over the home-stretch with his side-arm release, helping Williamson pick up the win. The Trojans return home tomorrow at 3:00pm to take on the Tusculum College Pioneers at Memorial Stadium.
