JEFFERSON CITY, TN--The Anderson University Trojans played their fourth road game out of their last five on Thursday, and pumped out 8 runs on 12 hits against the Carson-Newman Eagles, but it wasn't enough to combat a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth by Mills Rogers that drove in Evan Patterson for the winning run, as AU dropped their fifth straight 9-8, falling to 16-14 on the year. With the win, Carson-Newman improves to 16-11. Ryan Saxon collected three hits to lead the Trojans, while B.J. Smith and Josh Grubbs added two hits apiece. Smith also scored three runs. Justin Rogers picked up the loss for the Trojans. Rogers surrendered one run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning on the mound. After grabbing a 3-2 lead through two and a half innings of play, the Trojans gave up four runs in the home half of the third, falling behind 6-3. AU scrapped back over the next three innings, scoring a run in the fourth, three runs in the sixth, and a run in the seventh, taking an 8-6 lead. But Wesley Dozier slapped a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Mills Rogers beat the Trojans with a 2-out, walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, handing the Trojans a cold dish and a long ride home. The Trojans return home on Saturday to face Belmont-Abbey College for a 3-game Conference Carolinas battle. As the Alumni return home for what should be a festive weekend, the Trojans will try to get off the schnide and improve on a 5-6 conference record.
