LAURINBURG, N.C. -- The Anderson University baseball team took two of three from St. Andrews in a weekend Conference Carolinas series. On Saturday, Anderson scored 22 runs on 27 hits, including four home runs, to take the first game of the series, 22-5. Walt Quattlebaum hit two of the Anderson home runs, while Matt Hill and Ryan Saxon hit one homer apiece. Anderson finished the game with 12 extra base hits. Anderson was led by Derek Hipp, who 5-for-6 with a sacrifice fly, and Quattlebaum, who had five hits and drove in six runs. Anderson scored in every inning but the third. Saturday's second game was suspended in the fourth because of lightning with St. Andrews leading, 4-1. When the second game was resumed Sunday, St. Andrews went on to post a 6-3 victory. Anderson scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the St. Andrews lead to 4-3, but T.J. Chrusch took the mound for the Knights and held the Trojans scoreless for the final 2 2/3 innings. Chrusch allowed just one hit to earn his first save of the season. In the third game, Chrusch and Anderson's Blair Carson locked up in a pitcher's duel. St. Andrews took a 3-0 lead in the bottom on the fourth. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Sam Williams. Anderson finally broke through with three runs in the eighth to tie the game at 3. Hill had an RBI single, Clint Neville drews a bases-loaded walk, and Trent Still beat out a double play attempt to allow the tying run to score. Anderson scored what proved to be the winning runs in the ninth. Hipp had a run-scoring single and Carson provided a sacrifice fly to give Anderson a 5-3 lead. Cory Welch pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Carson to earn the victory. Anderson now stands at 10-23 overall and 4-8 in Conference Carolinas, while St. Andrews is 10-19, 4-11.
