Trojans Split Doubleheader With Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Coker snapped a six-game losing streak in Conference Carolinas with a 7-4 victory in the first game, but Anderson University bounced back to take the second game of the doubleheader 4-2 Friday afternoon. With the split, Anderson is now 11-25 overall and 5-9 in Conference Carolinas, while Coker stands at 12-21, 3-14. In the first game, Coker took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Scott Amann drove home Karl Ankersen with a RBI triple to left. Coker added their second run of the game in the fourth, this time it was Amann who scored on an RBI single by Ricky Deleandro. Anderson got on the board in the fifth with Derek Hipp bringing home Josh Grubbs with an RBI single, cutting the Cobra lead to 2-1. Coker regained that one run in the sixth with runners on first and third, Trojan pitcher Chris Pitts faked a pick-off to first base without stepping off, balking in Coker's third run of the game. The Trojans scored three runs in the top seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Grubbs drove in two runs with a triple, while Hipp had a RBI single. The Cobras scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Coker scored an insurance run in the eighth and held on for a 7-4 victory. Matt Long (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1/3 of an inning, allowing just one hit. Mikael Owens earned his first save going two innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Pitts took the loss for Anderson, allowing six runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Leading the Cobras at the plate was, Trey Lynch, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs, while Julio Gomez was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored one run. Amann finished 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and one run scored and Deleandro was 1-for-3 with two RBI. For Anderson, Grubbs was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, while Clint Neville was 3-for-4 with a double, and Hipp was 2-for-5 with two RBI. The second game started like the first game as Coker jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two run single from Ankersen. After a scoreless second inning, Anderson evened the game at 2 in the third with an RBI single by Blair Carson and a sacrifice bunt by Neville. The Trojans took the lead with a single run in the fourth, as Walt Quattlebaum sent the first pitch of the inning soaring over the left field fence for a solo home run and a 3-2 lead. Anderson tacked on another run in the sixth, as Quattlebaum led off the inning with a triple and then came home on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kirkland, giving the Trojans a 4-2 lead. Anderson's Luis Martinez earned the win, going four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts, while Cory Welch earned the save allowing just one hit in three innings. Chris Thomas (1-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings. For the Trojans, Quattlebaum was 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Carson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Grubbs, Hipp, Don Ballard, and Patrick West all had one hit in the game for Anderson. Ankersen led the Cobras at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Amann was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Deleandro and Will Poole were both 1-for-3. Coker and Anderson complete their three-game Conference Carolinas series Saturday at 1 p.m.
