Baseball Team Sweeps Pfeiffer

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University used three two-run home runs with two outs to sweep Pfeiffer in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson won the first game, 4-3, and then took the second game, 5-3. In game one, Anderson got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Blair Carson hit a two-out single to score Derek Hipp to make it 1-0. Anderson scored again in the fourth when Ryan Saxon hit the first two-run home run for the Trojans down the left field line to give AU a 3-0 lead. Pfeiffer tied the game in the sixth when Bryan Braxton hit a two-run home run, and Kyle McGarity drove in Will Davis with a single to left. But the Trojans responded in the bottom of the sixth when Carson led off with a double down the left field line. After a walk to Clint Neville, Trent Still flied out to advance Carson to third. Carson then scored on a wild pitch to give the Trojans a 4-3 victory. B.J. Scarborough earned the win, and Cory Welch picked up the save for the Trojans. Nick Fogleman was saddled with the loss for the Falcons. Carson led the Trojan offense by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI. Saxon contributed with his two-run home run in his only plate appearance. Bryan Braxton led Pfeiffer by going 2-for-3 with two RBI. In game two, Anderson again got on the scoreboard in the first. This time Carson blasted the Trojans second two-out, two-run home run to make it 2-0. Anderson scored again in the third when Matt Hill led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Carson. Still followed with an infield single to shortstop to score Hill and give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Pfieffer scored one run in the fourth when Davis singled and scored on a single to left by McGarity to make it 3-1. In the fifth with two outs, Still singled to left and scored when Walt Quattlebaum homered to left center to make it 5-1. Pfeiffer mounted a comeback in the sixth when Braxton and Shawn Coke hit solo homers to left center to cut the lead to 5-3, but Anderson held on for the win. Luis Martinez earned the win for the Trojans and Brady Peele picked up the save. Ben Beard took the loss for the Falcons. Anderson was led offensively by Still, who was 3-for-3 with a RBI, and by Hill, who was 2-for-3 with double and two runs scored. Braxton and Coke led Pfeiffer with their home runs. With the sweep, Anderson is now 15-31 overall and 8-12 in Conference Carolinas. Pfeiffer falls to 20-23, 7-13. The two teams will play the third game of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Anderson.
