Lees-McRae Fends off Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. -- League-leading Lees-McRae used a balanced offensive attack to hold off Anderson 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-13, 25-17) in Conference Carolinas' volleyball action Friday night at the Abney Athletic Center. With the win, the Lady Bobcats improved to 25-5 overall and 16-1 in the league, while Anderson fell to 19-12 and 11-6. Despite the setback, the Trojans have won four of their last five contests and seven of their last nine and will be battling for one of the top four seeds and homecourt advantage when they play host to Belmont Abbey in the regular-season finale tomorrow afternoon. The first set was tied five times in the early going before Lees-McRae freshman Megan Mitchell gave the Lady Bobcats a lead they would not relinquish at 14-13. The visitors edged out to a five-point advantage twice, the final time at 19-14, before the Trojans rallied to within two points late in the frame. Lees-McRae jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set, forcing AU head coach Craig Mosqueta to call for a timeout. The Trojans began to chip away and eventually knotted the score at 15 apiece behind the strong serving of Lindsay Doggett and Jamie Lancaster. The Lady Bobcats garnered another four-point lead at 21-17, but Anderson battled back once again to tie the set at 24-24 and went on to claim the second set on a kill by junior Adria Mullaney. The Lady Bobcats took a 10-3 lead in the third set, with AU rallying to within 15-10 on an emphatic kill by Mullaney, but it was as close as the Trojans would get as LMC collected the 25-13 victory. The fourth and final set saw the Lady Bobcats gain an early double-digit lead and hold it throughout the frame. "Lees-McRae is a good team," said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueta. "They do a good job of forcing you out of your game. We were not mentally into the game. We have to play every point and put together a complete game." Lancaster recorded a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and shared match-high honors for digs with teammate Katie Rich, each posting 16 on the night. Mullaney also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Lees-McRae had for players reach double figures in kills, with freshman Megan Mitchell handing out a match-high 45 assists. Anderson wraps up the regular season by playing host to Belmont Abbey and Augusta State at the Abney Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. First-serve for Senior Day is slated for 2 p.m. Game Stats Season Stats
