Trojans Drop Close Decision to Barton

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson was unable to overcome an outstanding defensive effort by the visiting Barton Lady Bulldogs, dropping a narrow 3-1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-21, 27-25) decision Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center. "[They] played an incredible defensive game," Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueta said. "In order to be successful we have to cut down on our errors. I thought we were average today. We also need to step it up on defense." Barton improved to 11-12 on the season and 6-5 in Conference Carolinas action, while the Trojans fell to 11-9 and 6-5 in league play. The opening set was tied four times before AU claimed a lead it would not relinquish, at 12-11, on one of junior Jamie Lancaster's team-high 19 kills on the afternoon. The Trojans pushed out to six-point leads twice en route to capturing the frame. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-2 advantage in the second set, but the Trojans battled back to knot the score at 15 apiece and grabbed a 23-19 lead. Both teams committed numerous errors throughout the set, but Barton rallied to pull even and the score was tied four more times before BC squeezed out the win. Neither squad was able to gain more than a three-point advantage in the tightly-contested third set until the visitors inched out to a 23-18 lead and held on for the 25-21 decision. The fourth and deciding set was again close, with the Bulldogs edging out to an early lead and AU inching back to hold a 21-19 lead, before BC chipped away to claim the contest. Lancaster recorded a team-high 19 kills, while junior Adria Mullaney added 13 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Katie Rich chipped in a team-high 18 digs and Lindsay Doggett dished out a team-best 34 assists. The Trojans now hit the road for a six-match road swing, beginning with a conference matchup at Limestone on Wednesday. First-serve is slated for 7 p.m. versus the Lady Saints.
