Trojans Top Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. -- The Anderson volleyball team closed out its two-match road swing through the Tar Heel State with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-13) win past Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center. Anderson (10-8, 5-4 Conference Carolinas) fell behind, 13-5, in the opening set but mounted a furious rally fueled by several Trojans that saw AU equal the score at 16 apiece on a kill by Marlie Bryant. The Crusaders edged back out to a brief 18-16 lead, but Anderson battled back once again to claim a one-point advantage on Shelby Netherton's kill. It gave AU a lead it would not relinquish, as the Trojans pushed out to the 25-21 win. Belmont Abbey (2-12, 2-7 Conference Carolinas) scored the first point of the second set, but it was the only lead of the frame for the Crusaders, as AU broke away from a 7-7 tie for the victory. The Crusaders held a 5-3 lead in set three, but AU rallied to knot the score at five, then roared ahead on the strength of a 15-4 run to put the set away. Anderson was led by Jamie Lancaster's 12 kills as the Trojans notched 40 on the afternoon with 14 errors on 105 total attacks (.248). Paulette Rivers and Adria Mullaney both contributed seven kills, with Mullaney leading Anderson with a pair of service aces. Lindsey Doggett distributed 34 assists. Defensively, Rivers posted three total blocks (two solo and one assisted), while Lancaster led all players with 13 digs. Mullaney and libero Katie Rich each finished with 11. Belmont Abbey hit. 018 for the match (25 kills, 23 errors on 109 total attacks) as Stefanie Holler led the way with seven kills, while Morgan Kirby and Bria James both added four. James led all players with four service aces. Kay Schellenberg handed out 16 assists. Defensively, Belmont Abbey posted 42 digs as Kirby and Taylor Stern both had ten. "We still need more energy and reduce our errors," said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueta. "I thought we did set the tone on defense." The Trojans now return home to the Abney Center for a Friday night matchup versus Mount Olive, with first-serve scheduled for 6:30 pm.
