Catawba Hangs On For Women's Title

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba shot a 327 in the final round for a two-shot victory over Wingate in the Anderson College Women's Invitational Tuesday at the Brookstone Meadows Country Club. The Lady Indians finished at 653, two shots ahead of Wingate, which fired the best second round in the 10-team field at 324 for a 36-hole total of 655. Host Anderson was third at 657, and Tusculum was fourth at 662. Anderson was led by Carlie Eastman, who finished in a tie for sixth at 161. First-round leader Paige Haverty shot a 76 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 151 and a one-shot victory over Beth Kirkham of Wingate. Kirkham's 72 in the second round was the low round of the tournament and the lowest round in the five-year history of the event. The previous record was 73 (Kim Keyer-Scott of Northern Kentucky in 2002 and Kristen Kyle of Catawba in 2003). Kirkham made a run, recording four 3s on the back nine on her way to a 1-under 34 but it wasn't enough. Rounding out the top five were Amanda Bowen of Tusculum (155), Heather Pothier of St. Andrews Presbyterian (157), and Shannon Smith of Wingate (158). Following Eastman for Anderson were Jenny Fretwell and Jenny Odle at 164, and Erin May at 168. Fretwell was Anderson's medalist in the final round with an 81.
