Catawba Women Lead After First Round

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Paige Haverty of Catawba shot a 4-over 75 to take the first-round lead and help give the Lady Indians a 1-shot lead over host Anderson College in the Anderson College Women's Invitational Monday at the Brookstone Meadows Country Club. Catawba finished with a total of 326, one shot ahead of Anderson (327) and five shots ahead of Wingate (331). Christina Wagamon and Melissa Kepley both shot 83, and Jaynelle Harmon provided an 85 for Catawba. Haverty built her one-shot lead by being the only player in the field to play the par-5 holes under par. She was 1-under Brookstone's five par-5 holes. Five other players were 1-over on the par-5s. Anderson was led by Carlie Eastman with a 76. Following Eastman were Jenny Odle 82, Jenny Fretwell 83, and Erin May 86. Haverty has a one-shot lead in the individual competition over Eastman and Heather Pothier of St. Andrews Presbyterian. Amanda Bowen of Tusculum (78) is alone in fourth, Kate Somek of Mount Olive (79) is fifth, and Beth Kirkham of Wingate (80), Ashley Ratcliff of Newberry (80), and Dessa Bokides of Belmont Abbey (80) all are tied for sixth. The second round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
