NEWBERRY, S.C. - Using a late first-half rally and long-range shooting accuracy, Anderson overcame an eight-point first half deficit to defeat Newberry, 61-56, in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena.

Anderson (9-12, 5-8 SAC) connected on a season-high 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from beyond the arc to win its second straight contest, while sweeping the season series with Newberry (12-9, 7-6 SAC), which lost its second straight and has dropped three of its last four decisions.

Anderson sophomore center Maci Siniard dropped in a layup that snapped a 55-55 tie with 2:38 left in the game, giving the Trojans a lead they would not relinquish as AU held the Wolves at bay down the stretch. The Wolves' Jessica Bearzatto hit one-of-two from the line to trim the AU lead to just a single point, but sophomore guard Amanda Parris answered with her second 3-pointer of the night to boost the Trojans' edge back to 60-56 with 49 seconds on the clock.

The Trojans' Alexa Neal dropped in one of two free throws with 12 ticks left to set the final margin.

The second half alone featured seven lead changes and six ties.

Anderson out-shot the homestanding Wolves 46 percent to 41.7 percent on the night and held a narrow 33-32 rebounding edge.

Anderson senior Ashley Abed led all scorers with 17 points on the strength of 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Alissa Diaz added 14 points, while guard Alexa Neal chipped in nine points and handed out a team-high five assists. Sophomore forward Tilde Ahlin pulled down a team-best eight rebounds on the night.

Devanee Taylor led a balanced attack for Newberry with 10 points and Leanne Watson narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Trojans wrap up the two-game SAC road swing at Catawba on Saturday with tip-off versus the Indians scheduled for 2 p.m. at Goodman Gym.
