Women’s Hoops Drops Decision to Florida Tech

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Anderson women's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 71-49 setback to Florida Tech on the final day of action at the Rollins Holiday Classic Thursday afternoon at Warden Arena.

Facing their second Sunshine State Conference opponent in as many days, the Trojans (6-4) fell behind early and never fully recovered as Florida Tech (12-1) claimed its eighth consecutive victory.

Trailing 40-19 at the half, AU opened the second frame with an 8-2 run that cut the deficit to 15 points with 18:01 left in the contest. But the Trojans were unable to get any closer, as Florida Tech pushed back to a 56-33 advantage midway through the final half.

The Trojans held a commanding 49-32 advantage on the boards, but committed a season-high 32 turnovers that that the Panthers converted into 33 points. AU bounced back from shooting a season-low from the field on Wednesday, connecting on 38.2 percent of its attempts despite shooting just 15 percent from beyond the arc.

Freshman Kimberly Major shared team-high scoring honors with a season-best 10 points and grabbed a career-high five rebounds, while senior Ashley Abed also reached double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Breonda Shannon narrowly missed her first double-double of the 2010-11 campaign with nine points and a season-high 12 boards.

Florida Tech's Katie Kingfield and Lynisha Nelson shared game-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece, while the Panthers' Tamara Dowdell and Briauna Hagins each notched 10 points.

Anderson ended its five-game road swing with three victories and will look to get back in the win column as the Trojans get back to South Atlantic Conference action with a three-game homestand beginning with Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Tip-off versus the Bears is slated for 6 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
