ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson softball team sent its' seniors out with a win on Sunday afternoon as the Trojans split with Mars Hill, dropping the first game 5-1 and taking the second game 8-3, at Smethers Field.
Anderson (22-21, 4-14 SAC) had trouble in the first game finding offense, but in the second game the home team scored eight runs off 12 hits to defeat Mars Hill (29-18, 7-11 SAC).
Game #1
Mars Hill 5, Anderson 1
In the opening inning, each team capitalized on miscues from the
opposing defenses, with each scoring a run.
Going into the fifth inning with a 3-1 lead, the Lions put the game
out of reach after scoring three runs off three hits. The big blow
in the inning came off of the bat of Natalie Haithcox, a two-run
home run that helped seal the 5-1 victory.
Casey Deer, (14-15) who made her final start in a Trojan uniform, took the loss as she gave up four earned runs in a complete game effort.
Abby Child went one-for-three, knocking in the lone run for Anderson.
Game #2
Anderson 8, Mars Hill 3
The Trojans struck first in the nightcap, scoring one run in the first inning off three hits. Danielle Swygert led off the inning with a double to left-center field. Two outs later, Amber Duncan scored the freshman when she singled to right field.
The Lions quickly struck back in the second inning, scoring two runs off of three hits. Mars Hill used two walks and three singles to take back the lead.
In a game that featured three lead changes over the first three
innings, Anderson took back the lead in the third inning when they
scored two runs off three hits. Both runs came off the bat of
Duncan when she sent a two-run long ball over the left field
wall.
The Trojans used a three-run fourth inning and a two-run sixth
inning to cruise to victory and finish the season with over .500
win percentage. The three runs in the fourth inning came off of a
Swygert double, an Emily Monteith single and a Duncan single.
Alex Waldroup and Madison Carpenter combined to give up just three
earned runs off seven hits. Waldroup (4-5) grabbed the win in her
final game at Anderson.
Duncan and Child both combined to go five-for-eight, producing
six RBI. Swygert went three-for-four with an RBI.
