Francis Marion Edges AU In Tennis Regional

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The No. 20 Francis Marion men's tennis team upset No. 16 Anderson, 5-4 Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region semifinals at Lander University's Joe Cabri Courts. FMU (17-5) will face host Lander at 11 a.m. Friday for the regional championship and the automatic berth to the NCAA Division II national tournament May 14-17 in Houston, Tex. Anderson its season at 18-8. The victory was Francis Marion's second of the spring over Anderson. Francis Marion took a 2-1 lead in doubles when its No. 2 team of Franklyn Emmanuel and Danajaya Mayadunne defeated Anderson's Jan Shiebler and Jose Gaspar, 8-4; and its No. 3 team of Karl Rogers and Mathew Keth defeated Anderson's Andres Weisskopf and Marc Pibernat, 9-7. Anderson's No. 1 doubles team of Renato Assuncao and Philip Pakebusch beat FMU's Oshada Wijemanne and Dilshod Sharifi, 9-8 for AU's doubles point. The deciding match came at No. 5 singles where FMU's Karl Rogers defeated Srikrishna Ramanatha, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. In the other singles matches, Pakebusch (AU) beat Franklyn Emmanuel, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1; Wijemanne (FM) beat Assuncao, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; Sharifi (FM) beat Jose Gaspar, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3; Weisskopf (AU) beat Bastian Czwalinna, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4; and Pibernat (AU) beat Keth, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
