Francis Marion Slips Past Anderson Again

SAVANNAH, Ga. - For the second time this season, the Francis Marion men's tennis team managed to slip past Anderson University Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament at Armstrong Atlantic State University. No. 14-ranked Patriots held off Anderson, 5-3 to advance to Friday's Mid-Atlantic Region championship match against host Armstrong Atlantic. Friday's winner gets a trip to next week's Division II national tournament at Kansas City, Missouri. Francis Marion (19-2) took two of the three doubles matches then won at the top three singles matches to clinch the match. But the singles victories were far from easy. Three of the matches went to three sets. No. 5-ranked Kevin Taylor outlasted No. 44-ranked Philippe Magat at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; David Budler knocked off Gustavo Carvahlo at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1; and Chatwinder Singh defeated Carlos Sanches, 7-6 (6), 6-4 - coming from 6-0 down in the first-set tiebreak. The loss ends Anderson's season at 17-5. The victory was Francis Marion's second this season over Anderson. The Patriots beat the Trojans 5-4 on Mar. 26.
