Trojans Charge Back to Force Double Overtime Draw with Newberry; 3-3

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Seeking its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season, the Anderson University men's soccer team did not lay down when it fell behind 3-0 to the Wolves late Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans mounted a charge that resulted in three unanswered goals of their own forcing Newberry to two overtime periods, resulting in a 3-3 tie.

With the draw, Anderson moves to 4-5-1 overall and 0-5-1 in SAC play while Newberry moves to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference action.

Newberry opened the scoring in the first half at the 23rd minute on a made penalty kick by Eric Brody. Just eight minutes later, Quintin Eisner found the back of the net off of a pass from Daniel Reyes to put the Wolves up 2-0 and set the halftime score.

The Trojans held the Wolves scoreless in the second period until the 71:54 mark when Claus Lehland scored off of a free kick to put Newberry up, 3-0.

From that point on, it was all Black and Gold with junior Timo Herrmann scoring just a minute and a half later off of a corner kick by Shinya Nagata to cut into the Wolves lead. Two and a half minutes later at the 76th minute Herrmann found the back of the net off of an assist by Landon Goodman for his second score of the match and his second career goal for the Trojans.

The Black and Gold gave one last push with Herrmann finding the foot of Cameron Emerson who was able to score the equalizer with 42 seconds remaining in regulation.

During the first overtime period, the Trojans outshot the Wolves 5-0 with two shots narrowly missing by hitting the crossbar. With just eight seconds remaining, Newberry was called for a foul that resulted in Anderson being awarded a penalty kick. Junior Josh Calabria lined up missing the potential game winner.

Newberry and Anderson played the second overtime even with neither team recording a shot resulting in a final 3-3 tie.

Anderson returns home to host SAC opponent Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
