Women’s Cross Country Finishes Second at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Anderson women's cross country team claimed second place at the 40th annual Gene Mullin Furman Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning at the Furman University Golf Course.

Competing in a field of eight teams, all seven Trojan runners that ran the 5K course posted season-best times. The host Paladins won the event for the second consecutive year, while Erskine finished third.

Senior Amanda Mahaffey (19:51.20) slashed more than two minutes from her previous season-best time to claim 12th place, crossing the line just more than a half-second ahead of teammate Emily Eckroth (19:51.79), who paced the Trojans in their previous three outings. The senior from Spartanburg, S.C. finished 13th.

Sydney Hazel (19:58.20) trimmed 53 seconds off her previous best pace and crossed the line in 15th, while sophomore Madison Guest (20:00.51) was faster with her personal best by more than a minute and crossed the line in 16th.

Junior Hannah Robles (20:46.20) also trimmed nearly a minute off her season-best time to claim 21st. Freshman Devan Fisher improved her personal-best by nearly 40 seconds, finishing 32nd and junior Rachel Westberry recorded a time of 22:24.18 en route to a 38th place finish.

Anderson will get back in action Friday at the Queens Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
