VASS, NC--When asked about weather conditions at the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Spring Invitational at Woodlake Country Club, Anderson University Trojans' head golf coach, Danny Neal said, "It was just brutal; most scores were higher than normal." While it was a difficult day to play a round of competitive golf, the Anderson University golfers did not freeze under the pressure. The Trojan women and men sit in second place and third place respectively, each in contention heading into the final round tommorow. Despite a blustery day with a high of 34-degrees, multiple snow flurries, and a miserable wind chill of 22-degrees, the AU golf teams were able to post very competitive scores. The women shot a 356 and sit in second place, 8 strokes behind #32 in the nation St. Leo University (FL), and 28 strokes clear of fellow Conference Carolinas member, Mt. Olive (384), who is third out of six teams. The AU men's team fought their way to a 328. The Trojans are third among only four teams competing. But only 15 strokes separate first and fourth place, with Anerson University 3 strokes back of host St. Andrews and only 11 strokes behind tournament leader, University of Montreal (317), as the seasoned Canadian team are obviously not bothered by the cold weather. "[317] is such a great score for these conditions," said coach Neal. "Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and play a little better and improve our position." The low man on the day for the AU men was Adam Sheriff as he grinded out a 79. A 5'8" senior and Anderson native, Sheriff ranks 12th nationally in scoring average in NCAA Division II competition. Also among the low four on the Trojans were junior Kenny Shockley (81), senior Will Ferguson (82), and freshman standout, Ryan Booth (86). The AU women were led by freshman, Laura Byers as she posted an 84. Byers comes to Anderson by way of Aledo, TX. She was joined in the low four by sophomore Hayley Parks (87), junior Sophie Dembroski (88), and freshman Anna Jenks (97) from Longview, Washington. Anderson's women are playing at Woodlake's Palmer Course, while the AU men are competing on the Ellis Maples Course. Wind gusts will go from 25 mph today to 5-10 mph tomorrow, with a high around 38-degrees; but coach Danny Neal said it best--"at least the sun will be shining."
