Trojan Track Snags Several First Places Finishes

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Anderson University men and women's track and field teams rounded out the weekend tallying ten Top-5 finishes across the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C. and the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington, Va. 

In Columbia, senior Elise Matthews (Piedmont, S.C.) won the women's 3000-meter race with a time of 10:30.84, while sophomore Sarah Wimpee (Summerville, S.C.) recorded a second-place finish in the women's weight throw competition, throwing 13.41m. In the women's 5000-meter race, senior Emily Golden (Tifton, Ga.) ran for 17:49.54, finishing third.  

The men's competition saw the Trojans' distance relay team (Jake Dentler, Cullen Ussery, Ty Nelson, Sean McAdams) take home first place with a time of 10:47.14. In the men's 5000-meter race, Anderson claimed three of the top four finishes, with senior Daniel Similton (Indian Trail, N.C.) finishing first and McAdams and Nelson coming in third and fourth respectively.  

In Lexington, freshman Jordan Gross (Chester, Va.) recorded a fifth-place finish and personal record in the men's high jump, recording a 1.86-meter jump. Freshman Maggie Long (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) also picked up a personal best with a 10.53-meter tally in the women's triple jump. 

Four Trojans also competed in the multi-event competitions in Virginia. Freshman Ally Macurda (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Georgia Piper (Dacula, Ga.) competed in the women's pentathlon. Macurda recorded a score of 2808, followed by Piper with a score of 2636. 

Freshman David Brown (Menomonie, Wis.) and sophomore Tyler Farris (Jefferson, Ga.) both reached Top-10 finishes in the men's heptathlon competition. Both Brown's fifth-place finish of 3776 and Farris' sixth-place finish of 3611 broke the standing Anderson University record. 

The Trojans continue competition on the road with a trip to Boston next weekend (Feb. 9-10) to compete in the BU Valentine Invitational.
