No. 44 Trojans Prepare for Home Opener Thursday

ANDERSON, S.C. – The No. 44 Anderson Trojans men's tennis team (1-1) opens its home season Thursday afternoon against rival Young Harris (0-1) at 2:00 p.m. Both teams are looking to bounce back from losses in their last match.

Where: Trojan Tennis Complex, Anderson, S.C.

When: Thursday, October 19, 2023

Time: 2:00 p.m.

Last Meeting at Anderson: Anderson won 4-3 on February 13th, 2019 

Last Meeting at Young Harris: Anderson won 6-1 on February 19th, 2022

Series History: Anderson leads 5-1, dating back to the 2011-12 season

 

COACH'S CORNER

"We're looking forward to getting back on the court this week against some good competition before we wrap up the fall season in two weeks," said AU Head Coach Joey Eskridge. "I'm looking forward to watching our guys and girls battle."

 

LAST TIME OUT

The Trojans were defeated by Emmanuel in their second fall match by a 5-2 score. AU secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3, but Emmanuel won five of the six singles matches. Junior Drew Cagle was the lone Trojan to win his singles match, at the No. 6 spot.

 

MATCH FACTS

  • AU has won 17 of its last 20 home matches against non-conference foes, dating back to the 2016-17 season.
  • The Trojans have won their last three matches against Young Harris.
  • AU has won the doubles point in the last three meetings with the Mountain Lions, including 3-0 sweeps in 2022 and 2020.
  • The Black and Gold went 3-0 last season against Conference Carolinas opponents. 

 

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS

  • Young Harris dropped their only match so far in 2023, a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Lenoir-Rhyne.
  • The Mountain Lions posted a 10-11 overall record last season, their final year in the strong Peach Belt Conference.
  • YHC earned five victories over SAC opponents a year ago, including Tusculum and Carson-Newman. Those two teams spent much of the season ranked and finished at Nos. 28 and 36, respectively.
  • Andrew Cobb begins his fifth season as head coach, amassing 28 wins during his time at Young Harris.
  • The Lions return 5 starters from 2022-23, including Rodrigo Mendoza. The senior recorded 7 singles wins a season ago, including a straight-set victory at the No. 2 position against No. 27-ranked Augusta.
