GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Anderson College head men's and women's tennis coach Brett Simpson is going home again. Simpson, a former All-American at Lander and a member of the Bearcat Hall of Fame, was named the head men's and women's tennis coach at Lander Thursday night. In eight years at Anderson, Simpson led the AC men to an overall record of 123-46 and the Lady Trojans to a record of 51-85-1. Under Simpson, the AC men were 64-5 in CVAC play and won three league regular-season titles and three league tournament titles. In his final six seasons, Simpson led the men's team to six straight regional appearances and two national appearances (2000, 2001). On the men's side at Anderson, Simpson coached nine first-team All CVAC players, two CVAC Players of the Year and two CVAC Freshmen of the Year. "I have really enjoyed my last eight years at Anderson College," Simpson said. "This is a great opportunity for me to return to the place where I went to school. It is the right move for me. "I want to thank (AC athletic director) Bobby Beville for the opportunity he gave me eight years ago. I'm happy I was able to take advantage of it." Simpson was named East Region Coach of the Year in 2001, CVAC Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004, and South Carolina Tennis Association Coach of the Year 2002. Simpson will replace Hall of Fame coach Joe Cabri as the men's coach and be responsible for bringing back the women's team, which was dropped from Lander's athletic program in 2000. Simpson will begin his duties on June 1. "I thoroughly enjoyed my college career at Lander and I look forward to working here," Simpson said. "Replacing Coach Cabri is a very unique situation because I am coming in behind a coaching legend. His records will probably never be broken. But since I was a part of that program, I have so much pride in what has been achieved. I am going to do everything I can to keep the program at the national level." Simpson, a native of Panania, Australia, is one of Lander's most decorated athletes. A three-time All-American, Simpson was a member of four national championship teams and teamed with Lee Holyoak to win the NCAA doubles title in 1994. In 1993, Simpson won the Rolex South Region singles title, was a finalist in the Division II National Small College Singles Championships, and was the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year. He was an academic All-American in 1993. Simpson will have one year to recruit players for the women's program before it begins competition in the 2006-07 academic year.
