Men’s Golf Tied for Fifth Following Day One of Belmont Abbey Invitational

CRAMERTON, N.C. - Paced by freshman Cole Jefferys' 4-over-par 75, the Anderson University men's golf team shares fifth place following Monday's opening round of the Belmont Abbey Invitational, hosted by the Crusaders at the par-71, 6,456 yard Cramer Mountain Country Club.

The Trojans find themselves midway back of the 12-team field, even with the Limestone C squad and just one shot behind fourth-place Erskine. Limestone B leads the two-day tournament by one shot over second-place Emmanuel and is four strokes in front of the host Crusaders. North Greenville is seventh, with the North Greenville B squad occupying the eighth slot. Barton, Southern Wesleyan, Erskine B and Belmont Abbey B round out the standings.

Belmont Abbey's Nick Stafford fired a 2-under-par 69 and leads Emmanuel's Andrew Smith by one stroke in the battle for individual medalist honors.

Jefferys shares the ninth spot with Limestone's Peyton Shore, while AU sophomore Forrest Fowler carded an opening-round 78 and sits in a tie for 20th place, alongside senior David Wachter. Fellow senior Rob Warren fired an 82 and is tied for 40th, with freshman Grayson Bell one shot further back after posting an opening round 83.

The final round is slated to start Tuesday morning.
