Trojans Drop Slugfest in Series Finale

ANDERSON, S.C. – Lenoir-Ryne junior David Bell's two-out double to the gap in left-center plated Bryce Stober with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and the 24th-ranked Bears outlasted Anderson, 11-10, in the series finale of a three-game South Atlantic Conference weekend, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 9-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 16-5 and 3-0 with its 11th win in 13 outings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior catcher Carlos Hernandez led the Trojans at the plate by going 3-for-5, with a double, a pair of singles and drove in five runs on the afternoon. The native of Maracay, Venezuela also scored a run. Senior Justin Fox added three singles in five at-bats, while driving in two runs and crossing the plate three times. Freshman Gray Wells was 2-for-4 at the plate, with a pair of singles. He also reached on a walk and on catcher's interference in the second inning and scored two runs on the day.

Freshman Braeden Harrison notched a single and an RBI-double, while shortstop JC LeGrand crossed the plate twice after posting a single and reaching base on two walks. Freshman Mac Ketchin added a single and a third-inning walk.

Junior Jonathan Duffie (0-1), the fourth of five Trojan hurlers, absorbed the loss in relief after allowing just the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on a single, while tossing three innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Behind RBI-doubles from both Hernandez and Harrison, the Trojans plated a pair of runs in the first inning and capitalized on a pair of singles, a walk, catcher's interference and a pair of sacrifices to build a 6-0 lead after just two innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne countered by outscoring the Trojans, 10-2, over the next four frames to claim a 10-8 edge at the end of six innings, but neither offense was ready to call it quits.

AU rallied to knot the score at 10 apiece by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on Hernandez's one-out single through the left side that brought home both LeGrand and Fox.

Following a scoreless eighth inning that saw both sides retired in order, Stober beat out an infield single to the left side, then crossed the plate when Bell ripped a double to the gap in left-center before being thrown out at third on the relay from Fox to LeGrand to Owens for the third out.

LeGrand led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and moved into scoring position two batters later when Wells singled through the left side, but the Trojans were unable to push across the tying run.
