Women’s Cross Country Team Claims Seventh at Eye Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Anderson women's cross country team began the 2010 campaign on a strong note with the Trojans posting a seventh-place finish while competing against a field that included eight Division I teams at USC Upstate's 27th Annual Eye Opener Saturday morning at the Milliken Research Park.

"We had the best start to a season that we have ever had," said Anderson head coach Randy Greer. "The team came out and really made a statement today. We were the number one Division II team and beat two D-I schools."

Preseason All-South Atlantic performer Whitney Bishoff paced the young but talented Trojans, placing eighth overall with a time of 18:39, which was more than a minute faster than her pace on the same course a year ago (19:38). A pair of freshmen, Lydia Davis (19:46) and Madeline Fitts (21:06), placed 32nd and 72nd respectively, while sophomore Emily Eckroth (21:07) and newcomer Madison Guest (21:08) were just behind at 73rd and 75th. Freshman Amanda Johnson (21:44) sophomore Isabel Berry (22:08) rounded out the AU contingent in 91st and 100th, respectively.

The Trojans outpaced the two-time defending SAC champion in Lenoir-Rhyne (9th), while also finishing ahead of Charleston Southern (8th) and Presbyterian (15th).

The Trojans are back on the course Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Clemson Invitational.
