BREVARD, N.C. - With senior Lindsay Doggett handing out a match-high 31 assists to set a new school record for career assists, Anderson blanked Brevard College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Friday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.
Anderson (13-8, 7-4 SAC) won its second straight conference match and swept the season series with the Tornados after also blanking Brevard in Anderson back in mid-September. Brevard dropped to 2-17 overall and 0-13 in league play.
Doggett, a native of Jacksonville, Ala., entered the contest with 4,474 career assists, needing just 29 assists to eclipse the previous record of 4,503 held by Trojan standout Leslie Nodine (1998-2001).
"I thought we struggled to get into a rhythm and made too many unforced errors," said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. "However we had a big milestone with Lindsey surpassing the career assist record."
Brevard tied the first set up at 13 apiece on an Anderson attack error, but the Trojans jumped back out to a five-point lead, going up 20-15 on a kill by senior Jamie Lancaster. The Tornados brought the game back to within two points as Kortney Conner placed in a kill off the assist by Bethany Stevenson, but the Trojans closed out the set on a kill by Calhoon to put Anderson up 1-0.
The Tornados opened up the second set by scoring the first point off an Anderson attack error, but the Trojans rallied to go up 13-9 after a BC attack error. The Tornados came back late in the set, using a 5-0 run capped off by an Osby kill to put the match at 18 apiece, but the rally fell short as Anderson closed out the set on a 7-1 run highlighted by service aces by Mullaney and Katelyn Kraft to end the set.
Brevard went up 15-11 in the third set, breaking a 10-10 tie on
Stevenson's serve to give the Tornados their largest lead of the
evening. Anderson rallied by scoring the next six points behind
Haley Hoover's serves, taking a 17-15 lead following a BC attack
error. Brevard brought the set back to within 22-21 after a service
ace by Yeomans, but a kill by Calhoon and a pair of BC attack
errors closed out the match.
Lancaster and Calhoon each reached double digit kills, with
Lancaster leading Anderson with 11 kills on the evening and
contributed seven digs, while Calhoon had 10 kills on the match to
pace the Trojans offense, while defensively Adria Mullaney led the
Trojans with 13 digs.
Ashlie Morrison and Jamie Atkinson each had five kills for Brevard, while Stevenson had 23 set assists to set up the BC attack. Sydney Yeomans led the Tornados backline with 13 digs, while Rebecca Schoonover added 12 digs. Jordei Osby led Brevard at the net with five blocks on the evening.
Anderson will get back in action Saturday, when the Trojans
invade Hickory, N.C., to face SAC-foe Lenoir-Rhyne. First-serve is
slated for 2 p.m.
