Beck Named Opening Day Starter for Johnson City Cardinals

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - After being selected in the 25th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft, former Anderson University baseball pitcher Landon Beck has been given the nod to start on the mound opening day for the Rookie Affiliate Johnson City Cardinals on Thursday in Bluefield, W.Va.

Last season for the Trojans, Beck tallied 90 strikeouts in 72.2 innings, while leading the team in complete games with five. Over his career, the right-hander posted 184 punch-outs with 11 saves and seven victories.

Earlier this summer, Beck was named the starter for the home opener for the Coastal Plains League's Columbia Blowfish on May 28. For the game, the Hartwell, Ga. native tossed six complete and struck out nine en route to the win. The outing was Beck's lone appearance with the Blowfish.

The Cardinals begin their season on Thursday when they travel to Bowen Field to face the Bluefield Blue Jays. Johnson City opens their home schedule on Sunday, as the Appalachian League member will play 68 games throughout the months of June, July and August.
