AU HIRES NEW HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH

AU HIRES NEW HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH

ANDERSON, SC--After making a run to win the Conference Carolinas tournament, the AU Volleyball team needed a new head coach; typically that is not at the top of the to-do list after a winning year, but when Jennifer Bell was moved into her new role as the AU senior woman administrator and director of compliance after 11 years with the Volleyball program, AU Director of Athletics, Nancy Simpson had to fill Bell's shoes. Enter Craig Mosqueda. Mosqueda joins the list of Trojan coaches by way of Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. In 8 seasons at Asbury, Mosqueda compiled 136 victories as one of only four coaches in the program's history. Mosqueda finished the 2008 season on a note very similar to Jennifer Bell. With a 27-17, Mosqueda led the Lady Eagles to the program's first ever KIAC Championship and berth in the NAIA National Tournament. Mosqueda has coached on both the club and high school level. Prior to taking the job at Asbury he served as the head volleyball coach at Seaman High in Topeka, Kansas for two seasons. His 2000 team compiled a record of 30-12, winning the regional tournament and placing eighth in the state tournament. Mosqueda is pro-active; in 2001, he started his own club program, and posted a 64-12 record, earning a 32nd place finish at the USAV National Tournament. In 1997 and 1998, he served as the volleyball coach at Highland Park High, where he taught biology for three years. Mosqueda graduated in 1995 from Washburn University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He has worked numerous camps including three years at the University of Kansas and two years at the University of Kentucky. "We are delighted to have Craig join the Trojan Athletic staff," said AU director of Athletics, Nancy Simpson. "He brings to us a wealth of experience and success, and will blend in well with our staff; I look forward to continued success under his leadership." Mosqueda will not make the journey from Kentucky to Anderson alone; he will be joined by his wife, Leah, and their children, Anna Claire and Jackson Craig. Mosqueda leaves part-time duties at Asbury for a full-time coaching career at Anderson University. "For so long, I did other things to compensate my income," said coach Mosqueda. "But I knew all along that this was my calling, and I am thankful to get the opportunity." Mosqueda began coaching when he went with a girlfriend to volleyball tryouts to help her coach--he ended up with a team of his own. After taking his own club team to nationals and compiling a 40-1 record, Mosqueda was certain of what was going to do. "From then on, I was just addicted to coaching," said Mosqueda. Asbury Athletic Director Gary Kempf had this to say of his former volleyball coach: "We are excited for Craig and his family for his new position. We appreciate everything he has done for Asbury College and our volleyball program. We will miss him tremendously, he's left our program with a lot of talent and we look forward to building upon the foundation he has laid." AU finished with a 24-14 overall record and a 16-4 mark in the conference last year under Jennifer Bell. As the second seed, AU went on to win the conference tournament. "I see a couple of holes we need to fill," said Mosqueda. "When we fill them, there is no question we will contend for another title next year."
