AU Outlasts Belmont Abbey

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Amanda Edwards had 17 kills and 10 digs and Jamie Lancaster had 15 kills to lead Anderson University to a 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 15-12 victory over Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match Friday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 14-11 overall and 9-2 in the conference, cruised in the first set and scored six of the last eight points in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. But Belmont Abbey, 7-12 and 6-6, used a 9-0 to take control of the third set then scored four of the final six point in the fourth set to force a fifth set. After Anderson built an 11-7 lead in the fifth set, Belmont Abbey scored three straight points. But the Crusaders could get no closer. Anderson is now 4-3 in five-set matches this season. Ashley Prince added 11 kills and six blocks for Anderson. AU setter Lindsay Doggett had 45 assists, and Adria Mullaney contributed 24 digs and six aces. Belmont Abbey was led by Leanne Cassandra and Bria James with 10 kills apiece. Emily Frohnapfel had nine kills and four blocks. Setters Rebekah Weber and Molly Gwaltney had 18 assists and 16 assists, respectively. Carrie Markham led the Abbey defense with 14 digs.
