Trojans Fend Off Feisty Lakers to Earn Victory; 68-61

Anderson, S.C – No. 13 Anderson University women's basketball team earned its second win of the season with a hard fought 68-61 victory over Peach Belt Conference opponent Clayton State on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

With the win, the Black and Gold move to 2-0 overall, while the Lakers slide to 1-1 on the young season.

Senior Alexy Mollenhauer scored a game-high 24 points, while pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Madison Baggett netted eight points, recorded six rebounds, while dishing out three assists and tacking on three steals. Freshman McKenzie Gadson ripped down eight rebounds, while classmate Jalyn Spurlin came off the bench to score seven points and grab four rebounds for the Trojans.

Anderson carried a six point lead into halftime, sparked by Spurlin's seven point spurt to close out the final three minutes of the second quarter.

The Lakers used a 9-0 run late in the third quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game. However, a layup by senior Amari Grevious and one of Mollenhauer's five three-point baskets put the Trojans back up by four.

The Trojans went up by as much as 10 points in the final period, outscoring the Lakers 22-17 to claim the victory.

Clayton State forced 22 turnovers with Anderson dominating the boards, 52-28.

"What a great team win today over a top peach Belt Team, said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "It was a battle from start to finish and I am really proud of how well we controlled the boards. We need to clean up the turnovers, but you have to give credit to Clayton State for causing so many. But all in all a solid start with two region wins."

Anderson returns to action on Wednesday when it faces nonconference opponent Claflin. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
