SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The fourth-ranked USC Upstate men's tennis team swept the doubles competition en route to taking a 5-0 victory over 24th-ranked Anderson University in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Regional of the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. Upstate (21-4) advances to the regional championship match to face the winner of the Lander-Georgia College & State University match. The regional championship will be played Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. The winner of the regional championship advances to the Division II Nationals May 9-12 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Sandy Franz and Javier Tori claimed a dominating 8-1 victory over Anderson's (17-8) Marc Pibernat and Andres Weisskopf at the No. 2 doubles position. Stefan Dumitrescu and Renzo Airaldi took an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso and Leandro Osorio teamed to take an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Leading 3-0 heading into singles play, Upstate needed to win just two of the six singles matches to advance to the regional championship. Gonzales-Orbegoso gave Upstate its fourth team point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pibernat at the No. 4 position, and Franz, ranked 25th in the nation in singles, gave Upstate its fifth point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stephan Fehske at the No. 2 slot.
