Softball Sweeps Winston-Salem State in Home Season Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. – Behind a solid pitching effort from the Trojan staff, Anderson University softball won its season doubleheader home opener, defeating nonconference opponent Winston-Salem State in game one, 9-1, and in game two, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex

With the victories, Anderson moves to 3-1 overall while Rams begin their season 0-2 overall.

GAME 1     Anderson 9     Winston-Salem State 1

Senior Meghan Majeski, juniors Mattison Cantrell and Kennedy Burton and sophomore Kayson lead the way for the Trojans in game one. Majeski went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Cantrell batted 2-for-2, including a double. Burton and Boatner each batted 1-for-1 with Boatner drilling her first homerun of the 2020 season.

Anderson scored at least a run in each inning, driving in two in the first and third, four in the second, and a lone run in the fourth inning.

The only hit and run of the game for the Rams came in the top of the fifth inning when centerfielder Alleisha Pullen hit a homerun to spoil junior Harlie Duncan's no-hitter.

Duncan (2-0) faced 16 batters, striking out eight in her second win of the young season.

Winston-Salem State's Tia Robinson (0-1) gave up nine hits while walking three.

Majeski continued her solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3. Sophomore Morgan Charter batted 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

The Black and Gold scored one run in its opening inning while crossing the plate again in the third to go up, 2-0. AU broke the game open in the by scoring three runs.

Junior Sarah Middleton (1-0) carried a no-hitter through five and two thirds innings, before giving up two hits to the Rams. Middleton recorded 12 strikeouts on the afternoon.

The Rams Anna Morrison (0-1) gave up seven hits while walking six Trojan batters.

EXTRA BASES

"Very good pitching both games, said head coach Tommy Hewitt. "A one hitter by Harlie and a two hitter by Sarah.

"We also had some timely hits in both games", added Hewitt.

UP NEXT

Anderson will travel to nonconference opponent Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 4 pm.
