Track Teams Open At Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Anderson College track and field teams opened their season December 2-3 at the Clemson Invitational. More than 30 teams participated in the event, including Division I powerhouses Virginia Tech, Florida State, and Tennessee. Leading the Trojans was Jeffrey Watson, a senior from Cheraw, S.C. Watson placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 12.78 meters. "I was a little disappointed because I know I can throw better," Watson said. "This just lets me know that I need work that much harder." In the one-mile run, Nate Parsons, an All-Region cross country runner, recorded an 18th-place finish in his first college track event. Also making their collegiate debuts were freshmen runners Savannah Springer, Janie Weatherman, Tara Ridgewell and Andrea Berg. Springer competed in the 800 meter run, while Weatherman, Ridgewell and Berg ran the 200-meter race. Ridgewell and Berg also competed in the 60-meter dash. "We wanted to use this meet to accomplish two things -- we wanted everyone to get out and compete to gain experience and we wanted to gauge where everyone is performance-wise so we know what to work on," said assistant coach Randy Greer. "We did both and I'm happy about that." Anderson's next is at Appalachian State University on January 27-28 in Boone, N.C. Story By: Jeff Massey
