Trojans Drop Series Opener to Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team fell, 18-6, to Newberry in the opener of a three-game in South Atlantic Conference series, Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson fell to 15-15 overall and 2-11 in conference play, while Newberry (28-7, 10-3 SAC) has won two of its last three outings and improved to 8-4 on the road this season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
JC LeGrand was 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs with his fourth home run of the season, while Tyler Berry was 2-for-2 at the plate, with a pair of singles and a run scored. James Hanvey added a pair of singles and also reached base on a seventh-inning walk, while driving in a pair of runs. Nick Vella reached base twice – on a sixth-inning walk and an eighth-inning single – and crossed the plate both times. Justin Fox posted a walk and a single, with Shane Thomas also recording a walk and a single.

Freshman hurler Walker Noland (3-3) absorbed the loss after allowing nine runs (four earned) on 12 hits over 4.2 innings of work on the mound. The right-hander struck out five batters and walked two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Newberry built a 6-0 advantage over the first three innings and following a scoreless fourth frame, the Wolves added three runs in the fifth and scored nine unearned runs in the sixth inning.

AU got on the scoreboard with a solo run in the sixth inning and added five more runs in the eighth inning to round out the scoring. LeGrand – the third batter of the inning - clubbed his homer over the right-field wall with Vella on base – while Hanvey added a two-RBI-single later in the inning.

NOTABLES
• The Trojans and Wolves have met on 57 occasions, with Newberry leading the all-time series, 34-23. The first-ever meeting between the two programs occurred during the 1998 campaign.
• The Wolves have won the last five matchup and eight of the last 11 meetings.
Nick Vella extended his hitting streak to six games.
Kye Andress is riding a five-game hitting streak.
JC LeGrand has reached base safely in 12 straight games.

UP NEXT
Anderson and Newberry will get back on the diamond for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, which is slated for a 1 p.m. first-pitch.

Admission to Trojan baseball games is normally free, but Saturday has been designated as a Make-A-Wish fundraising day by the AU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Fans are encouraged to make a donation either online or at the door, with everyone encouraged to register online. By registering online, fans will reserve their spot at the game for admission (at a reduced rate) and receive a free snack and beverage of their choice.

Fans are asked to register in advance for admission at a suggested amount of $5 per person which is discounted from the price for admission the day of event.

Anyone not registered online for event, will be encouraged to purchase a ticket for admission the day of the game. ($7 Adults, $5 Seniors/Youth, Children 12 & Under & Anderson University Student ID Free).

No pets are allowed inside Memorial Stadium with the exception of service dogs.
