ANDERSON, S.C. - Sophomore Marissa Mitter led all players with 13 kills to help lead the Anderson volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-22) sweep of South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry, Tuesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

Anderson (10-12, 8-8 SAC) wrapped up its three-match conference homestand with the win, while sweeping the season series with the Wolves. Newberry fell to 8-13 overall and 4-11 in the league, while dropping its fourth decision in five outings.

Mitter added seven digs on the night, while the trio of Allison Gaminde, Serena Jackson and Jessica Harris each posted seven kills apiece. Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry recorded her third straight double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs, marking the 10th time this season the native of Lares, Puerto Rico has reached the plateau. Junior Tinsley Hallman equaled her season-high with four service aces, while adding nine digs and a pair of block assists.

The Trojans snapped an early 2-2 deadlock in the opening set with a 7-1 outburst to take a lead they would not relinquish. Harris notched two of her kills on the night to fuel the decisive run. The Wolves countered with a 7-3 run of their own to trim AU's advantage to just two, at 12-10. But it was as close as Newberry would get until the final moments, as the Trojans rattled off a 9-3 surge to build its largest lead of the frame, at 21-13. The Wolves refused to go away quietly, however, as the visitors chipped away at the AU lead and climbed within 22-20 before committing an attack error. Hallman followed with an ace to regain the momentum for the Black and Gold and Gaminde closed the set with her fourth kill.

The second set was tied just once, with the Trojans claiming an early advantage and never trailing. With Anderson leading, 4-3, Harris ignited a 5-0 run with back-to-back kills as AU built a 9-3 cushion. The Trojans maintained the margin until building their largest lead of the frame on the final point.

With Newberry leading, 7-4, in the third and final set, AU reeled off a 9-1 outburst behind the strong serving of freshman Jayln Knight. Hallman and Harris each contributed a pair of kills during the run that saw the Trojans turn the three-point deficit into a five-point lead. The Wolves trimmed a late five-point AU lead down to one on four occasions, but the Trojans held off Newberry down the stretch, as Mitter knocked down back-to-back kills to cap the win.

Anderson will get back on the court Friday, when the Trojans visit Brevard. First-serve in the Tar Heel State is scheduled for 6 p.m.
