Women’s Tennis Earns No. 5 Seed in SAC Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. - With the league schedule concluding on Sunday, Anderson University women's tennis earned the No. 5 seed in the annual South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will square off with No. 4 seed Newberry in the opening round on Thursday. First serve from the Brevard College Tennis Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.

AU has captured triumphs in its last three matches, as it has a home contest with archrival Erskine on Monday to close its regular season. Currently, the Trojans boast a 14-5 overall record and ended their conference schedule with a 7-4 mark. Despite the No. 5 seed, Anderson's 14 victories on the season marks the highest by an AU team since joining the SAC before the start of the 2011 season.

The Trojans look to avenge an earlier season setback to the Wolves, as they fell 6-3 in Newberry on March 24. The matchup is a rematch of AU's opening round contest in last season's SAC Tournament, as the Wolves defeated the Black and Gold, 5-2, ending their season. Newberry, which was slotted as the fourth seed in last season's tournament, eventually moved on to the SAC Tournament final where it fell to Tusculum, 5-4.

This season, Newberry holds a 17-5 overall record with a match pending with Erskine on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Wolves closed out their conference slate with a narrow 5-4 win over Coker to set their SAC record to 8-3 for the season. With the match against the Fleet pending, Newberry has won its last three matches and five of its last six.

Anderson seeks its first win in the SAC Tournament since the 2013 season when it advanced to the tournament final. After last season's 0-1 mark, the Trojans are 4-4 all-time in the annual conference tournament.
