SALISBURY, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Anderson fell, 1-0, to No. four seed Catawba in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field.
Anderson ended its season at 7-7-3, while Catawba improved to 13-6 and moved into the semifinals to face top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Friday at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.
Lenoir-Rhyne edged the Indians, 2-1, in overtime in the two teams' regular-season meeting.
Anderson defeated Catawba 1-0 in the SAC regular-season opener
in mid-September, but was unable to duplicate the feat, as the Lady
Indians extended their win streak to five matches and have won nine
of their last 11.
Catawba junior Amy Iwanicki scored in the second minute, when
teammate Karen Presnell played a ball in the box over to Iwanicki
who fired from close range into the left side of the net.
The Trojans nearly answered less than four minutes on their lone shot of the first half, but a header by freshman midfielder Chelsea Hamrick off a corner kick from teammate Sarah Laney was just high and glanced just off the crossbar.
Catawba out-shot AU, 6-4, and held a 7-3 advantage in corner
kicks. Catawba freshman Bethany Davis notched her third shutout in
five matches, while Trojan junior keeper Kaitlyn Neipp recorded
three saves.
