Hipp Named First-Team Academic All District

BRISTOL, Conn. -- Senior centerfielder Derek Hipp has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District baseball first-team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday afternoon.

The native of Saluda, S.C., maintained a 3.83 grade point average while majoring in business management. Hipp started 51 of 52 games as the Trojans closed the 2010 campaign on a strong note, upsetting top-seeded Mount Olive and knocking off second seed and No. 24 nationally ranked Erskine in the Conference Carolinas tournament last month.

The 6-foot 180-pounder ranked 11th in the conference in hits and 15th in runs scored and posted hitting streaks of 12-games and six-games during the season. He was second in runs scored on the team, tied for second in home runs, was third in hits and total bases and ranked fourth on the team with his .323 batting average. Hipp also garnered academic all-conference accolades earlier this year. Joining Hipp as the lone representatives from Conference Carolinas were Airlon Vinson and Jesse Lancaster of Mount Olive.

In order to earn recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution and are voted upon by CoSIDA members. They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their respective institution. As a first-team all-district selection,

Hipp is eligible for consideration nationally as an academic All-American. District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
