TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Using a 16-hit attack, the Anderson softball team swept a doubleheader past North Greenville, 6-5 and 10-3, in nonconference action Thursday afternoon at Pepsi Field.

"We played against a good solid team today and managed to come away with two wins." said Anderson head coach Tommy Hewitt. "I felt we swung the bats really well, made plays on defense and got a good performance out of our pitching staff."

Anderson improved to 4-0 on the young season and has won six straight past the Crusaders en route to taking a 14-10 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs. North Greenville dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Anderson 6, North Greenville 5 (8 innings)
Junior second baseman Jessica Neidigh was 2-for-3 in the opener, with a single and a double and walked once, while scoring twice. Junior Bri Cason recorded her first home run of the season with a solo shot in the top of the seventh inning that eventually sent the game into extra innings. Senior shortstop Abby Child drove in three runs with a third-inning double and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Sophomore Molly Child notched a single and a walk and scored twice, including the game-winner, in four trips to the plate.

Junior Katelynn Howser started in the circle for the Trojans, going four complete innings and surrendering three earned runs on four hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out one. Freshman Lauren Rudesheim earned her second win of the early season, tossing four innings of relief and allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out one Crusader. She also issued an eighth-inning walk.

North Greenville capitalized on a lead-off double in the bottom of the first inning by junior Sarah Armstrong, as the centerfielder scored on a one-out sacrifice fly off the bat of Rachael Glazebrook that gave the Crusaders an early 1-0 edge.

Abby Child doubled home Neidigh and Molly Child, who had both walked with two outs in the top of the third inning, giving Anderson a brief 2-1 advantage. However, North Greenville quickly regained a one-run lead by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth frames, Cason's one-out home run in the top of the seventh evened the score and forced the extra inning after Rudesheim retired the Crusaders in order in the bottom of the frame.

Rudesheim, who was placed on second to begin the extra inning, scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Molly Child after Neidigh moved her to third with a bunt single. The Trojans recorded three of their six hits in the extra frame to take a three-run lead, as Abby Child's sacrifice fly plated Molly Child and Swygert followed with a single to score Molly Child.

North Greenville answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and had the bases loaded with two outs and the tying run at third, before Rudesheim induced a pop out to Neidigh at second to end the game.

Anderson 10, North Greenville 3 (5 innings)
Cason blasted her second home run in as many games and finished the nightcap 2-for-2, while adding a walk, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Freshman Augie Pena was 2-for-3, including a double and also recorded an RBI, while fellow newcomer Courtney Czentnar also finished the day by going 2-for-3 at the plate. She recorded an RBI and scored once. Senior first baseman Danielle Swygert was 2-for-4 and crossed the plate once, with Abby Child drawing a pair of walks in four trips to the plate and scoring both times. Neidigh was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pena got her first start of the season in the circle and earned the complete-game five-inning victory, while allowing three earned runs off six hits. She walked one, while striking out three Crusaders.

The Trojans struck first, posting three runs in the second inning, with Cason providing a two-out, two-run home run to fuel the outburst. But North Greenville answered with three in the bottom of the inning to knot the score.

Anderson added an unearned run in the third and put the game out of reach by plating six runs in the fourth inning on the strength of four singles and a pair of walks.

The game was halted after five innings due to darkness.

Anderson will get back on the diamond Sunday, when the Trojans welcome Chowan to Smethers Field for a noon doubleheader.
