Queens Knocks AU from SAC Tournament; 4-3 (10 innings)

 

HARTSVILLE, S.C.-The Anderson University softball team lost 4-3 in extra innings in an elimination game to Queens at the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at Byerly Park in Hartsville, S.C.

Anderson drops to 34-16 overall while Queens improves to 21-28 advancing to the 3:30 p.m. elimination game with Newberry.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Trojans collected nine hits on the afternoon with sophomore Kasey Grant, junior Cailah Niles, sophomore Breanna Hagerty, senior Augie Pena, sophomore Michaela Smith and junior Rachael Barefield each recording a single. Freshman Meghan Majeski was the only Trojan to record multiple hits in the game batting 2-for-5.

Queens Pearson (15-17) pitched the complete 10 innings giving up nine hits while striking out 10.

Anderson's Randee Bettis (6-5) got the nod in the elimination game pitching 9 inning, facing two batters in the 10th, giving up nine hits while striking out an impressive 14 batters. The 14 strikeouts ties her career record that she recorded earlier this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Queens used two solo home runs to claim a 2-0 lead through three innings of play. Anderson answered back in the top of the fourth scoring one run to cut the lead in half.

Anderson scored the tying run in the top of the sixth after Hagerty led the inning off with a single. Smith bunted Hagerty over to second moving to third on Barefield's single. Hagerty scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 2-2.

Both teams remained scoreless in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings with Anderson scoring an unearned run in the 10th. Barefield's single scored pinch-runner Lauren Rudesheim to give the Trojans the temporary lead.

Queens scored two run in their half using a walk, two hits and an error to claim the 4-3 victory eliminating the Trojans from the SAC Tournament.
